Two Arroyo Grande swimmers competed at the 2015 Western Zone Senior Championships in Clovis this past week. Swimming for Puma Aquatics, Trent Schachter and Kevin Virnig competed against 1200 of some of the best from California and the rest of the Western Zone of USA Swimming.
Schachter, who holds school records in the 100 butterfly and backstroke, had a big time performance at the long course meters meet. He had personal bests in four out of his six events. His time improvements can be seen below.
The highlight of the meet came in the finals of the final day of competition. Swimming as the sixth seed out of over 200 swimmers in the 100 meter butterfly, Schachter tied for fourth with a time of 57.36 seconds and qualified for the 2015 Winter Junior National Championships. The meet will be held December 9-12 in Austin, Texas, and will feature the highest level of 18 and under swimmers in the country.
Swimming in first senior level meet, Virnig swam the 100 and 200 breaststrokes as well as the 100 backstroke. He initially had a best time in the 200 breaststroke, but a late disqualification nullified the time. He overcame the disqualification and swam the event again in a time trial, and swam an even faster time then he had previously.
