Arroyo Grande boys place Third at CIF for Second Straight Year

The Arroyo Grande boys placed third at the CIF-SS Division 2 championships for the second straight year.

The champion was once again Los Osos, who defended their title by beating Santiago/Corona by 1.5 points. Los Osos put up 257 points to Santiago’s 255.5. Arroyo Grande scored 177.5 points. Fourth place was Walnut with 159 points.

Relays played a big role for all three of the top teams, as all had a relay in the big finals. In both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, Los Osos and Santiago went 1-2.

For AG, the 200 medley relay of Charlie Watkins, Zach Stevens, David Malouf, and Tyler Gamble placed fifth with a 1:37.29. They set the school record in prelims with a 1:36.45. Gamble, Christian Solis, Clint Doucette, and Hissam el-Effendi put up a 1:27.10 in the 200 free relay, which earned them a third place finish. The 400 free relay of Stevens, Solis, Malouf, and el-Effendi swam a 3:13.48 for sixth. Both free relays broke school records.

In the individual events, Los Osos relied on its stars, while Santiago ground out points with depth. Kyle Coan won two events for Los Osos (the 200 free and 100 fly), and Michael Forbes won one and was second in another (the 50 free and 100 free). Meanwhile, Santiago got chunks of points by having three swimmers qualify for the big finals in both the 50 and 100 freestyles.

For AG, Gamble broke two school records in the 50 and 100 freestyles. In the 50 he placed second with a 21.16, smashing his own school record of 21.31 which he set in prelims. In the 100 he put up a 46.46 for third place, crushing the previous mark of 46.99.

Stevens placed second in the 100 breaststroke with a 55.35, and placed fifth in the 200 IM with a 1:54.98. The 100 breaststroke time earned him All-American honors for the fourth straight year. He also finished his illustrious career having placed in the top three at CIF in the 100 breaststroke in each of his four years.

el-Effendi tied for eleventh in the 50 free with a 21.98, and David Malouf placed 18th in the 100 butterfly with a 54.04 (he went a 53.30 in the prelims).
